Nominees for best living actors not named Daniel

Time magazine went ahead and called it… but here are five other nominees for greatest living actor, full body considered, not current trends (*cough* De Niro)… We have a severely likable and confident man who reveals his depths with the less than conventional roles, the non-everyman everyman who balances moods above and below the surface, the remarkably handsome latter day Cary Grant that co-directs movies that aren’t his, the fiery ball of eclecticism and of course Jack Nicholson. Those descriptions lining up with this order, including five noteworthy, representative films. Yeah, there are important names left out. I think I could fit Buscemi in a top 10.

Denzel Washington:
Training Day
Malcolm X
Philadelphia
The Hurricane
The Great Debaters

Robert de Niro:
The Godfather: Part 2
Taxi Driver
Raging Bull
The King of Comedy
Midnight Run

George Clooney:
The American
Up in the Air
Syriana
Michael Clayton
The Descendants

Philip Seymour Hoffman:
The Master
Capote
Synecdoche, New York
Doubt
Punch Drunk Love

Jack Nicholson:
The Shining
As Good As It Gets

Five Easy Pieces

special mention: Christian Bale (The Fighter, The Dark Knight, American Psycho, Velvet Goldmine, Rescue Dawn)
