So what is sound mixing? So what is sound editing? Put crudely, sound editing is the audio equivalent to production design, whereas sound mixing is the audio equivalent to cinematography. Basically this means that sound editing provides the additional sounds needed to complete the overall shot, sound mixing puts those sounds in specific places.
So there is ultimately a lot of overlap, although being chosen by different people, there will be differences. Some attention to the differences are required.
The nominees will, as usual, include many features that are simply undeniable blockbuster with a wealth of excellent sound, regardless of the fate of the overall movie. There are others that will be brought in from films with a larger overall Oscar presence, yet ones still having much sound work also. These will probably be a good mixture of those vying for larger awards and those that will be aiming for this award as one of few. My picks therefore are as follows:
21 Days: Best Sound Editing
Zero Dark Thirty
Life of Pi
The Dark Knight Rises
